“Last season was fantastic for me. I managed to get into the top ten in the giant slalom five times and I was even on the podium twice. That’s something I hadn’t thought possible at the beginning of the season, and the summer was just as positive for me. I trained hard and well with Swiss Ski and even managed to get a few days off for the necessary physical and mental rest, thanks to good scheduling and support from my team. Recently, I've been asked lots of times, sometimes even with rather a euphoric tone, about my goals for the 2019/2020 season. Sure, you can always ask :-)

helvetia2019 02 But seriously: there’s a huge gap created by Marcel Hirscher and Thomas Fanara thanks to their sporting achievements in the giant slalom and above all due to their fantastic personalities at the World Cup. I want to help close this gap by expressing my love for skiing, doing my best in each race, and off the slopes just being myself – a cheerful young guy from Nidwalden who’s lucky enough to have the best job in the world. Otherwise, nothing has really changed for me. I’m keeping both feet firmly on the ground and trying to move closer to my long-term goals thanks to the quick and finely-tuned Stöckli skis that my technician Chris always keeps in prime condition.

In the giant slalom I have to justify the occasionally very good results from last year. That’s a major target for me this season. The focus in my training group is on the giant slalom. I want to focus on my main discipline but not specialise in the medium term. My goal is to continue to be a good giant slalom skier and, with enough time for training, luck and talent, evolve into a good all-rounder. In the coming season it’s really important for me to build on my results in the giant slalom and get further experience in the super-G and downhill. Without any specialist training – I'm only starting actual downhill training in November – you can’t expect any miracles from me in the speed disciplines, even though I do have the advantage of knowing some of the most important courses now. I still don’t know them that well and I still don’t know all of them. However, I'm not putting myself under pressure and I'm giving myself enough time: in the speed disciplines above all, the journey is the destination – I love to ski.

Helvetia continues as my main sponsor

helvetia2019 01Still part of the Helvetia team: Let's go!

I am grateful that my sponsors and partners are also not putting me under pressure; they have always shown patience and have been all the more pleased about each of my successes as a result. Of course, at this point I would like to give a special mention to my main sponsor Helvetia. With Helvetia on my helmet I will be able to continue to compete for points alongside a strong Swiss brand in the next two seasons. This support is very important to me and is not something I take for granted. I am happy that since 2016 my management team has very carefully selected, managed and secured the long-term future of my partnerships since 2016. All my partnerships are set to continue and some may be renewed in the coming months, such as my premium partners Electrolux and Syntax*. A big thank-you to my main sponsor Helvetia and all my partners

These f words are the real deal!

Of course, I am also very grateful to all my fans on the slopes, watching at home and on social media. I am really happy that the fan club – where all my most loyal fans join forces – is growing all the time. Fans, friends and family are of course the nicest f words :–). In other words: at the moment, I’m feeling very relaxed, I’m super motivated and in top condition for the start of the season, which is of course taking place in my favourite venue – Sölden. The last two years had to be cancelled because of the weather, so hopefully 2019 will see perfect conditions. Let’s see how it goes at the end of October: it is what it is. In this spirit, I would like to wish all my readers a great 2019/2020 season! Full steam ahead!

Speak soon, Marco

* I am very grateful to have Syntax Translations Ltd, an extremely knowledgeable and professional partner, on board to make sure that my message is translated into different language and in different cultures. Syntax supports me in creating different language versions, for example, in English, French and Chinese.
